Based in London, ambient pop experimentalists Piano Magic formed in 1996 and have recorded for over 15 labels. No less than 30 musicians have passed through their ranks, the solo constant being Glen Johnson, who used Ivo's collective This Mortal Coil as the template for his group.
Piano Magic signed to 4AD in 2001. Their first release for the label was the soundtrack to Spanish director Bigas Luna's film Son De Mar. This was followed by the Writers Without Homes album in June 2002. The lengthy list of guest contributors included ex-Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde, German post-rockers Tarwater and John Grant of The Czars. Johnson also persuaded legendary '60s folk siren Vashti Bunyan to come out of retirement to sing on ‘Crown Of The Lost’, her first recording in nearly three decades. Piano Magic left 4AD shortly after the record's release.
