In 2010, Yoko Ono performed several shows with the Plastic Ono Band and special guests at the Orpheum in Los Angeles. Among the guests of Iggy Pop, Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Perry Farrell, RZA, Lady Gaga, Carrie Fisher and Joseph Gordon-Levitt performing songs from throughout Yoko’s career were tUnE-yArDs, an act she had recently fallen in love with.
Their update of the 1972 lyrics of Yoko's ’We're All Water’ was to prove a highlight and shortly afterwards, Yoko...
Tomorrow marks the seventh instalment of Sounds From A Room, the monthly live music event taking place in the Roi des Belges, a boat placed atop Queen Elizabeth Hall in London throughout the city's Olympic year as part of Room For London (a creative joint venture between ArtAngel and Living Architecture). Overlooking the River Thames and London's heart, tUnE-yArDs have kindly been invited to perform one of the twelve unique live shows to take place in the boat. Following on from the likes of...
The first single from the forthcoming album (RED) Hot + FELA has debuted today with a remake of Fela Kuti's 'Lady' being made available to buy now. The track also appears today as part of a launch for a ten day AIDS awareness initiative, (RED) RUSH TO ZERO, hoping to raise funding and awareness to help deliver an AIDS Free Generation by 2015.
Taken from the follow-up to 2002's Red Hot + Riot, 'Lady' features the extraordinary talents of Angelique Kidjo, tUnE-yArDs, Akua Naru and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson. Recorded earlier this year with producer Paul Heck at Converse Rubber Tracks studio, their version was done on it's second take, with no pro-tools cut and paste - just amazing musicians playing live in a room.
tUnE-yArDs are currently on a North American tour and headline New York's Terminal 5 tonight. They're also due to play numerous festivals and shows in Europe throughout the summer.
Today tUnE-yArDs (with help from YouTube Music) debuts the third video from their critically-acclaimed Pazz & Jop topping album w h o k i l l, for the album's opening track, 'My Country'. You can watch the video below.
The video, a spirited second collaboration with director Mimi Cave (who also helmed the brilliant video for 'Bizness'), features young stars from Brightworks, a K-12 school in San Francisco, and the San Francisco Rock Project, a non-profit organisation focused on music education for youngsters. Madeline O'Kennon also reprises her portrayal of tUnE-yArDs' Merrill Garbus, first seen in the video for 'Bizness'.
tUnE-yArDs released their much anticipated second album, w h o k i l l, on 4AD in April. Backed by a wave of critical praise following thrilling performances at SXSW and the memorable video for lead track, 'Bizness', w h o k i l l represented a bold step forward for the band, pulling in new fans across the board. Showcasing a rich sonic palette, the brighter production values displays the sonorous voice of Merrill Garbus and the keen pop sensibility at the heart of the band.
Tune-Yards is the singular musical project of New England native Merrill Garbus. Possessing an expansive sound that marries a coarse folk ingenuity with the bold pop sensibility of an R&B siren, her debut record Bird-Brains, released on November 16, was assembled with a staunch DIY aesthetic, all dramatically on show in this inauguratory showcase for the 4AD Sessions alongside fellow...
