Profile

The short-lived but artistically successful 4AD spin-off label Guernica signed Bettie Serveert for the UK (they were on Matador in the US) in 1991. The band were a four-piece from Holland - the name translates as "Bettie to serve", a nod to 1970's Dutch tennis star Bettie Stove - comprised of Carol Van Dyk (guitar/vocals), Peter Visser (guitar), Herman Bunskoeke (bass) and Berend Dubbe (drums). When their debut album Palomine appeared in 1992, its bittersweet melodies and Carol van Dijk's sultry singing attracted much acclaim. Subsequent albums - "Lamprey" in 1995 and "Dust Bunnies" in 1997 - were released in the UK by Beggars Banquet. The band are still active.
