The Breeders third album is a low-key, introverted return, that blends the stripped down sounds of Pod and The Amps' Pacer into strangely intimate, feminine garage rock and is an admirably honest portrait of the band.
With Gold sales in the UK and Platinum in the US, the Last Splash was a hazier, more disjointed continuation of the harder pop of Pod. With the sonic collage of "Cannonball", The Breeders had a crossover hit that catapulted the group into stardom.
It started as a side project but, thanks to the album's creative songwriting, immediate production (courtesy of Steve Albini) and clever arrangements, Pod has a fresh, raw sound, complete with unusual subject matter, which made it an instant classic.
