Bettie Serveert translates to Bettie Serves, with the band having named themselves after a book written by Dutch tennis player and 1977 Wimbledon ladies singles finalist, Betty Stöve.

Forming in Amsterdam in 1986, they didn’t last long by splitting after just one gig. Regrouping in 1991, they signed to 4AD offshoot Guernica for the European release of their debut album, Palomine, which came out in 1993. Warmly received by critics, Palomine ensured Bettie Serveert a quick rise in prominence, marking the beginning of a long career ahead.
